Man Utd must spend, says Woodward

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has said that the club needs to spend more money to stop their ‘disappointing’ season, according to ESPN.

Man Utd manager David Moyes

United have struggled since manager David Moyes took over the reins from Alex Ferguson this season but Moyes will now have money made available to him to strengthen the squad.

“The long-term strategy is to build a competitive squad that can challenge for trophies,” said Woodward.

“We have the ability to do that. We can buy players to compete at the top level, which is what we should be doing.”

The statement by the vice-chairman suggests that the club are ready to spend what is necessary to win trophies, with the club already shelling out a club transfer record £37.1m for Juan Mata in January.

The Manchester side currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League and are nine points away from Champions League qualification, a position which has been a disappointment for the club.

“We once again achieved a record revenue quarter with strong contributions from our commercial and broadcasting businesses despite the current league position, which everyone from the team manager down has acknowledged is disappointing,” added Woodward.
