Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has conceded his side are in the mix to win the Premier League title this season, ESPN has reported, although the Reds boss insists there are other teams better placed than his.

A last minute penalty from Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool three points in a 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday, moving the Merseyside club four points behind leaders Chelsea, who drew with West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.

Arsenal meanwhile drew with Manchester United while Manchester City’s game with Sunderland was called off due to adverse weather conditions, meaning Liverpool were the only side in the top four to pick up a victory.

“We're going to keep pushing,” Rodgers said. “We've shown enough times we're a very good side. We're chasing and there are other teams still ahead of us, so we'll need some of them to drop points, but we know we still have City and Chelsea to play at home.

“We've defended poorly at times this season, mistakes and individual errors that have cost us, but we're a very aggressive and offensive team going forward and we showed that again.

“There's still a long way to go, 12 games, but you've seen the development of the team in terms of character and focus out there. We had to dig deep. There's great character there and the belief in what we're doing is very high.”

Rodgers declined to follow the trend of equine references from his fellow title-chasing managers in comparing his side to their competitors, instead taking the canine route.

“I don't do all that horse stuff,” Rodgers said, tongue-in-cheek. “Jose [Mourinho] is very good at all that sort of stuff. We may be the Chihuahuas that run in between the horses' legs. But we're just about improving with each match.”
