Chelsea to offer Torres to Atletico for Costa

Chelsea will hope to tempt Atletico Madrid into selling Diego Costa by offering former Atleti striker Fernando Torres in exchange, the Metro has claimed.

Diego Costa

The newspaper cites reports in Spain that claim Chelsea are preparing the offer for the summer as manager Jose Mourinho searches for a new centre-forward to lead his attack next season.

Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain are among the names to have been mentioned but it is said Mourinho has made Brazil-born potential Spain international Costa his priority.

Chelsea are thought to have tried to sign Costa in January but their deadline day move was knocked back by the Vicente Calderon side. A fee of £20m will said be offered to Los Colchoneros with Torres moving in the opposite direction, the report suggests. Atletico would hold out for £35m, it adds.

Costa, 25, began his career as a professional in Portugal with Braga, joining Atletico in December 2006. He was loaned back to Braga, as well as spending time at Celta Vigo and Albacete before Atletico sold him to Real Valladolid.

They did however include a buy-back clause in the deal and duly exercised the option in 2010, a year after the switch. Costa was finally loaned to Rayo Vallecano before returning to the Atletico fold, and has scored 45 goals in the past two seasons.

He made two friendly appearances for Brazil but confirmed he wished to change allegiances to Spain in late 2013 having been granted a Spanish passport that summer.
