Szczesny: Arsenal going for revenge against Liverpool

Arsenal are aiming to take revenge on Liverpool for their heavy Premier League defeat when the sides meet in the FA Cup this weekend, ITV Sport has reported.

Wojciech Szczesny as Arsenal lose at Liverpool

The Gunners’ heavy defeat came only last weekend and just seven days will have passed when they face off once more, this time at the Emirates Stadium.

Liverpool were four goals clear at Anfield inside the first 20 minutes and eventually won 5-1, Mikel Arteta scoring a consolation penalty for the Londoners.

Szczesny, who was in goal for Arsenal, believes playing Brendan Rodgers’s side again so soon will be good for Arsenal’s mindset.

“It will be a big game for us because we conceded five against them and it was a little bit humiliating,” the Poland international said.

“We want to recover as soon as possible and it is a good chance that we play them a week afterwards.”

Arsene Wenger dismissed the result as a one-off but Szczesny admitted Arsenal’s defence has been breached in that manner too often this season, the goalkeeper pointing to Manchester City’s 6-3 win at the Etihad Stadium as well.

“I would like to say it was a one-off, but there were two of them this season,” Szczesny argued. “It was just an accident, it happened. Liverpool were terrific offensively, we were a little bit weak defensively and got punished.

“I certainly believe it is out of our system now because we turned up against United with a good defensive show.

“You can't say you saw the real Arsenal at Anfield, you have to judge us over a longer period of time. People have seen the real Arsenal over the last year. We conceded five on Saturday, but our defensive record over the last year or so has been amazing.”

Arsenal have the joint-second best defensive record in the Premier League, conceding 26 goals in as many games. Everton have also conceded 26 times, although after their Wednesday fixture was postponed, have only played 25 matches.

Chelsea have the strongest defence in the division, with 21 goals against in 26 games.
