Le Saux: Shaw should reject Chelsea and stay at Southampton
Thursday 13 February 2014
Former England left-back Graeme Le Saux has advised Luke Shaw to ignore the advances of Chelsea and stay at Southampton for a while longer, the Metro has reported.
Chelsea are said to be considering a summer offer of £25m for the 18-year-old, who is believed to be a Chelsea supporter, but Le Saux - who played for both clubs in his career - believes the time isn’t yet right for Shaw to move on.
“I have been watching Shaw play quite a lot,” he said. “He has the qualities of an attacking full-back who has a lot of pace and a lot of energy. His defending is betting better as he gets more experienced, too.
“But he is still very young and the more experience he gains for his club the better. I feel that he’s in the right place at the moment and his development is crucial.”
Shaw has been touted as a replacement for Ashley Cole, 33, who has lost his place in the Chelsea side in recent months. Cole’s Chelsea contract expires at the end of the season and it is thought he will leave Stamford Bridge, potentially paving the way for Shaw to move to London.
Le Saux began his career with the Blues, making 90 appearances before joining Blackburn Rovers in 1993. He spent four years at Ewood Park and was part of the 1995 title-winning team but returned to Chelsea in 1997, staying until 2003, when he joined Southampton in a part-exchange deal that saw Wayne Bridge leave the Saints.
