PSG enter race to sign Chelsea defender Luiz

Big-spending French champions Paris St. Germain have joined Barcelona in the race to sign Chelsea defender David Luiz in the summer, Talksport is reporting.

David Luiz

According to French magazine L’Equipe, Laurent Blanc’s side are hoping to sign Luiz as a replacement for his former Chelsea teammate Alex, who is expected to leave at the end of the season. Should the move happen, Luiz could be playing alongside Thiago Silva, his central defensive partner for the Brazilian national team.

Luiz has found opportunities of playing in the centre of the Chelsea defence hard to come by this season, with manager Jose Mourinho often preferring English duo Gary Cahill and John Terry. Occasionally, Luiz has been deployed in a midfield role at Stamford Bridge, where he arrived in January 2011.

PSG and Barcelona are both willing to allow Luiz to play in central defence, but the French club could have the edge in the race to sign the 26-year-old, as they are reportedly willing to offer more money than Barcelona, whose valuation of the player is in the region of £20.5m.
