Hodgson concerned by Champions League final date

Roy Hodgson fears he will not have a full-strength England squad at his pre-World Cup training camp if a Premier League team reaches the Champions League final, ESPN has reported.

Hodgson is to take an England squad to Portugal for the week commencing May 19, with a friendly against Peru at Wembley later in the month.

The training camp would run until May 23 - the day before the Champions League final, which will be staged at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz, home ground of Benfica.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all still in the competition, with the Round of 16 to start on Tuesday. City meet Barcelona and Arsenal play Bayern Munich with United going against Olympiakos and Chelsea vying with Galatasaray, the latter pair of games taking place a week later than the former.

While Hodgson welcomed the prospect of English representation in the showpiece, he added it would cause a problem with his pre-tournament planning. “In many ways I would be happy if an English team got to the final,” Hodgson said. “All it would mean is that they would join with us later.

“We would have to try and find some way of rewarding them with a couple of days off here and there. But what they would have to accept is that they won't get the full week off.

“They may have to accept their holiday period is compromised this year but to be honest, most would accept it.”

England travel to Miami after playing Peru for two friendlies in the United States in early June, the same time Hodgson names his World Cup squad. England’s first game takes place on June 14 against Italy.
