Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes his side’s Champions League tie with Barcelona is a chance to show the extent of their ability, rather than a reason to be fearful, the Daily Mail has reported.

The first leg of the Round of 16 fixture takes place at City’s Etihad Stadium on Tuesday and despite Barca being in rampant form in La Liga - beating Rayo Vallecano 6-0 on Saturday - Pellegrini welcomed the tough opposition.

“It’s a good chance to show how good we are,” Pellegrini said. “They have a lot of experience, they have a great team, they have the best player in the world but I think also we are a good team with good players.

“I don’t have any fear about playing Barcelona because this team has got to continue to develop the mentality to play against important teams, whether that’s in the last 16, the quarter-final. I hope we can win at home.”

City go into the game on the back of a 2-0 FA Cup win over league leaders Chelsea, with goals from Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri. They trail Chelsea by three points in the league and are in the latter stages of the Champions League for the first time, having previously failed to get out of the group stage in their first two attempts.
