Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic believes that teammate Ryan Shawcross deserves a place in the England squad for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil, reports the Stoke Sentinel.

Ryan Shawcross

Begovic, who will represent Bosnia in their maiden appearance in a major international tournament, thinks that Shawcross’ performances for the Potters in the Premier League have suggested that he is capable of filling the gap left by John Terry, who retired from international football in 2012.

However, the 26-year-old has not been first choice under Roy Hodgson for England’s World Cup qualifying campaign, with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Everton’s Phil Jagielka often the preferred duo. Shawcross indeed only has one international cap to his name; in a friendly against Sweden in November 2012.

And although Shawcross also faces competition from the likes of Michael Dawson, Joleon Lescott, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, Begovic said: "I've been beating the drum for Ryan for a while. I get to train with him and play with him every week and see what kind of quality player he is. I don't think he would ever let England down.

"It's important to have leaders and he's been our captain for a number of years. It's someone they need to look at and make a decision.

"I wish he was Bosnian, of course! He's a great player. But even saying that, we have got a few good players in our team and I'm sure he will get his international chance soon.

"There's no doubt you do get overlooked if you're not playing for one of the (title-chasing) clubs. The bigger teams play in the bigger games and grab the bigger headlines, that's the way it works.

"It's more difficult for guys at our club to make the impressions they need to, but if they look around they'll see good players everywhere."
