Sunderland are hoping that striker Steven Fletcher will be fit enough to face Arsenal on Saturday after revealing that he is set to return to training on Wednesday, reports the Newcastle Chronicle.

Steven Fletcher

The Scotsman has long been suffering with an Achilles problem, which has resulted in him making only 12 Premier League starts this season. In recent weeks, the 26-year-old has been receiving extensive treatment in a desperate bid to avoid the prospect of undergoing surgery.

With Jozy Altidore having struggled to score goals since joining last summer, Fletcher’s return could prove crucial as they battle for Premier League survival. Sunderland are currently in the bottom three, and they also have the Capital One Cup final coming up on March 2.

Manager Gustavo Poyet is hopeful that Fletcher will be fit enough to play a part at the Emirates Stadium. He said: “He will start tomorrow with us. Then depending on how he feels, we can either accelerate him for Arsenal or make sure he is right for the final.

“He’s had a programme with the expectation that he will be able to play at Arsenal. I don’t know Achilles injuries, but for people I have known, they are always worried about feeling something, so we’ll have to see how he is.”
