Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes Bayern Munich are without equal but is still backing the Gunners to progress from the Champions League tie between the teams, the Guardian has reported.

Bayern are currently 16 points clear of the Bundesliga and have not lost domestically all season, but were beaten by Arsenal in the second leg of last year’s meeting between the sides in the same competition.

Arsenal won 2-0 on the night but a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium in the first encounter saw Arsene Wenger’s side eliminated while Bayern, under Jupp Heynckes, went on to claim the trophy by beating Borussia Dortmund in the final as part of an unprecedented treble. Bayern also won the German Cup and league title before Pep Guardiola replaced Heynckes.

“Bayern are untouchable at the moment, both in the Bundesliga and in Europe,” Mertesacker told the German press. “The only thing that makes me positive is that we beat them in Munich last year. That allows us to go into the game with a certain degree of faith. We're going to give it our best.

“They're a little bit better in every department under Guardiola. They've set a new benchmark.

“We're going to have to get a different result this time because the 3-1 defeat practically decided the tie last year. That was the decisive game.”
