Magath hits out at Fulham processor Meulensteen

Fulham manager Felix Magath has criticised his predecessor Rene Meulensteen, the Daily Mail has reported, hitting out at the state of the club after the Dutchman’s brief tenure.

Meulensteen left Manchester United when Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of last season and after a short spell with Anzhi Makhachkala, was appointed as a coach under Martin Jol in the autumn.

Jol was sacked in December and Meulensteen assumed his duties, only to be relieved of them on February 14. Meulensteen initially remained at the club, as did his assistant Ray Wilkins and technical director Alan Curbishley, but all three have now left Craven Cottage.

“My predecessor let them play very attacking football for four games. Then he suddenly rearranged the defence, and that destabilised the whole team,” Magath told SportBild, adding: “My most important task is to bring in a clear structure.”

Magath is regarded as a disciplinarian and one of his first acts at Fulham was to call the players in for extra training ahead of the game against West Brom this week on what was originally a day off. “No one had a problem with that,” Magath insisted. “West Brom are a direct competitor in the relegation fight, and this is probably the most important game in this club’s history.”

Fulham are currently bottom of the Premier League, four points adrift of safety and with only two wins in their last 10 league games.

Magath has previously managed Wolfsburg, Schalke, Bayern Munich and Stuttgart, among others.
