Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been named in Gordon Strachan’s latest Scotland squad, the Daily Mail has reported, more than a year after his last international appearance.

Fletcher was forced onto the sidelines for a lengthy spell by ulcerative colitis, but recently returned to action for his club. The 30-year-old Scotland captain has made nine appearances for United this season, all of which have been since December.

“It was wonderful over the Christmas period to see [Fletcher] back playing football,” Strachan said. “We have got to take it a stage further. I've seen him playing and he has lost none of his enthusiasm, which he will never lose. To have him back in the squad is terrific.”

Fletcher has 61 caps for Scotland, scoring five goals, since making his senior debut in 2003. His first goal came in his second appearance for Scotland, against Lithuania. Fletcher became Scotland captain in 2009.

Strachan also names Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Dundee United’s Andrew Robertson in the party to play Poland in March. Bardsley dropped out of the international reckoning after losing his place for the Black Cats, while Robertson is included in the senior national team set-up for the first time.
