Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has claimed that Bayern Munich will be nervous ahead of their Champions League last-16 first leg clash, according to ESPN.

The Gunners face the Champions League holders at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and will hope to build on their performance from their last face-off.

The two sides met at the same stage last year when the German side took a 3-1 win back to the Allianz Arena, and despite Arsenal shocking Bayern with a 2-0 win in the second leg they failed to progress due to the away goals rule.

The 28-year-old now believes that Bayern will be cautious of the Londoners in their next battle having seen what they can do just 11 months ago.

“It's really difficult to say what would be a good result in this first leg,” said Vermaelen.

“The priority is always that you don't want to concede a goal at home, but it's about two legs, and we won away last season of course, so you never know what will happen.

“They will think about that game in Germany last season too, that might make them a bit nervous. We were really close to knocking them out and I don't think they would have been happy to draw us at this stage. There were easier draws than us!”
