Manchester United are hopeful they can sign Southampton defender Luke Shaw in the summer, according to ESPN.

Sources close to the club revealed that a reported £22.5m bid placed by United in January ‘remains on the table’.

Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr had previously stated that she would not allow the sale of any of the club’s top assets in the recent window but United could try again in the summer.

The Saints owner also assured manager Mauricio Pochettino that none of the team’s best players would be making an exit from the south coast club.

The 18-year-old left-back is a product of Southampton’s youth team set-up and has gone on to represent England at Under-21 level.

The young defender has been in impressive form this season which has led to a number of clubs being interested in his signature, in particular Manchester United and Chelsea.

Shaw’s good form has led to a regular place in the Premier League has also put him in contention for an England senior team call up for the upcoming 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
