Roberto Martinez has confirmed former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson as part of his backroom team at Goodison Park, Sky Sports has reported.

Ferguson had been working with the club’s under-18s but from Monday will aid Martinez and the manager’s existing staff with the senior side. Ferguson made more than 200 appearances for Everton in two spells, scoring 73 goals before retiring in 2006.

Martinez added that not only does he believe Ferguson will make a fine coach with the first team but the Scot could go on to be a manager in the future. “He's developing into a really exciting coach,” Martinez said.

“He has been working with the first-team on a part-time basis and he's been making a big influence with the work he's been doing with the under-18s.

“I do feel we need his influence in the first-team environment and we are going to enjoy having Duncan Ferguson here on a permanent post as part of his development.

“He's got the desire and the hard work that is needed. He's in love with the game - that's something that hasn't changed - so he can achieve as much as he wants.”

Ferguson also represented Dundee United, Rangers and Newcastle United in his career, and made seven appearances for Scotland.
