Swansea City interim manager Garry Monk believes he is ready to match wits with Rafael Benitez as the Welsh side meet Napoli in the Europa League on Thursday, BBC Sport has reported.

Monk stepped in to the dugout when Michael Laudrup was sacked, having been a player at the Liberty Stadium to that point. He admits he didn’t anticipate taking charge of Swansea in Europe this season but believes he is ready for the challenge.

“Of course, I never expected to be in this position,” Monk said. “But I am prepared. I am a level-headed lad, I know what I want to do.”

Monk, 34, has had three games in charge, beating Cardiff City 3-0, drawing 0-0 with Stoke City and losing to Everton in the FA Cup. The Swans are currently 10th in the Premier League, but only four points clear of the bottom three.

Napoli, by contrast, are third in Serie A, 13 points behind leaders Juventus and four adrift of second placed Roma.

“Napoli are one of the best teams in Europe,” Monk continued. “I have seen a lot of their games and studied them. They have good players all over the pitch.

“At this moment in time, they are one of the most powerful clubs in terms of what they can spend and the quality of players they have, so we are in for a tough time. But it is a game we are really looking forward to.”
