Courtois: Mignolet doesn't respect me
Thursday 20 February 2014
Thibaut Courtois has accused Simon Mignolet of launching a personal attack on him, ESPN has reported, claiming the Liverpool goalkeeper doesn’t respect him.
Courtois, on loan at Atletico Madrid for the last three seasons after moving to Chelsea, believes that Mignolet’s public question of Belgium Coach Marc Wilmots’ decision to field Courtois amounts to a personal attack.
The two have long been engaged in a rivalry for the starting spot for the Red Devils, with Belgium qualified for the World Cup this summer.
Courtois wants Mignolet to show more respect after Mignolet complained about Wilmots’ decision.
“When someone says he's been unfairly dropped as Belgium's No.1 keeper I see it as a personal attack on me,” Courtois said. “It shows you don't accept your manager's calls - and you have no respect for the first choice. He needs to show respect for whoever is currently in that role.”
Courtois starred as Atletico Madrid beat Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday, making two excellent saves in the first-half to prevent the Italians taking the lead. Diego Costa later capitalised by scoring the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute.
Mignolet moved to Anfield from Sunderland in the summer. Both he and Courtois have 14 caps for Belgium.
