Rooney agrees new Man Utd deal
Wayne Rooney has agreed a new Manchester United contract worth around £300,000 per week, BBC Sport has reported.
Rooney had a year left on his existing contract and his new deal will run until 2019, it is believed. The fresh terms see a pay rise in the region of £50,000.
The England striker will mark 10 years as a United player this summer, having made the move to Old Trafford from Everton in 2004, following that year’s European Championships. Rooney has scored 208 goals for United in 430 games, 42 short of the goals record set by Sir Bobby Charlton.
Rooney’s future at the Premier League champions came under question in recent years after twice issuing a transfer request, most recently last season after a fall out with then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Chelsea made two approaches for the 28-year-old but were rebuffed each time as Ferguson’s replacement, David Moyes, rejected any possibility of Rooney moving to Stamford Bridge.
Moyes was Rooney’s manager in his two years in the Everton first team, giving the then-16-year-old his debut on the opening day of the 2002-03 season, against Tottenham Hotspur.
Rooney has made 28 appearances for United this season, scoring 11 goals, with the club currently seventh in the table.
