Wenger: Szczesny will be punished for gesture

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said Wojciech Szczesny will face internal disciplinary measures after he was caught making an offensive gesture after being sent off against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, ESPN has reported.

Szczesny was dismissed after bringing down Arjen Robben in the first-half of what eventually was a 2-0 defeat. Upon leaving the pitch the Poland international made a hand gesture that Wenger says was borne out of frustration.

“We will deal with that internally,” Wenger said when asked if any action will be taken. “We don't agree with that.

“It was frustration. We are professionals and me included, we have always to master our reactions. Wojciech is part of that as well.”

Goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller gave Pep Guardiola’s side the victory, coming after David Alaba missed the spot kick that resulted from Szczesny’s foul on Robben. Mesut Ozil had already missed a penalty for Arsenal, who also lost to Bayern at the Emirates Stadium at this stage last year.

A win in the Allianz Arena 12 months ago wasn’t enough to send the Gunners through as despite the 2-0 victory, Bayern’s 3-1 win in London sent them into the next stage on away goals. Bayern went on to beat Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley, completing a treble of Champions League, German Cup and Bundesliga.
