Man United and Man City to battle over defender van Dijk
Manchester United and Manchester City are in competition for the signature of Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Red Devils defender Nemanja Vidic announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season meaning that manager David Moyes will be in the market for a new centre-back.
Van Dijk has already been the centre of attention from other Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester City after impressing for Celtic so far this season.
The 22-year-old joined the Scottish club from FC Groningen for £2.6m last June and may have their grip on the player tested.
Despite being contracted at the club until 2017 it will be difficult for Celtic to turn away bids of over £10m for the young defender if United and City do come calling.
City and Arsenal will also be on the search for a new centre-back in the summer as Joleon Lescott’s contract expires and Thomas Vermaelen is yet to make a decision on his Gunner’s future.
Due to his impressive stint in defence, which has seen the hoops not concede a Scottish Premiership goal since November, the young Dutchman is tipped for a call up to his country’s World Cup squad in the summer.
