Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has spoken of his delight at the major role he has been given at the club under manager Roberto Martinez, the Independent has reported.

Ross Barkley

Though highly rated, Barkley only appeared sporadically under Martinez’ predecessor, David Moyes, before the Scot left to manage Manchester United last summer. But since being rewarded with a start at Norwich City on the opening day of this season, the youngster has been a standout performer, scoring four goals in 25 appearances.

Barkley’s performances have led to many to call for him to be included in the England squad for this summer’s World Cup, but the 20-year-old credits Martinez for his emergence. Of the former Wigan Athletic boss, Barkley said: “Things have been great under the boss.

“He’s helped me a lot tactically and lets me go and play my own game. He’s given me the confidence that he believes in me. He’s great with all the lads like that. He’s down to earth but very focused on what we want to achieve. We want to finish in the top four and he’s very motivated to be successful.

“This season I’ve been able to play in behind the striker in the Premier League, and, combined with our tactics of pressing higher up the pitch and the change of our shape, I’m really enjoying my football in that position.”
