Hull manager Bruce thrilled by Jelavic and Long partnership

Hull City boss Steve Bruce has told of his delight at the impact that January signings Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long have made, after his side won 4-0 at Cardiff City on Saturday, writes Goal.com.

After coming through an early spell of Cardiff pressure, the visitors took the lead when Tom Huddlestone’s shot deflected past David Marshall. Then, seven minutes before half time, Jelavic scored his first of the afternoon after some smart link-up play with Long.

The Irishman also had a hand in Jelavic’s second goal, a header from Liam Rosenior’s cross, before Jake Livermore completed a miserable afternoon for the relegation haunted hosts by guiding home the fourth.

Following the win, which lifted Hull to 11th and six points clear of the drop zone, Bruce said: "I didn't think we played particularly well in the first half; we gave the ball away a little bit too cheaply. But what has got us the win is that little bit of quality we have invested in up the top end of the pitch.

"When you are not playing very well, if you've got two like we have then you are a threat. And certainly the second goal, in particular, they made it out of nothing. The link-up play was there for all to see.’

Jelavic has now scored three times since joining from Everton, while Long has found the net twice upon arriving from West Bromwich Albion, and Bruce added: "That was the difference, the ability to score a goal and with these two in the team, we have all of a sudden got it.

"The two of them have a great appetite for the game and work ethic. They are a handful; with the pace of Long and the physical presence Jelavic gives you, with a turn of pace too, they are a handful for any defence."
