Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised his side’s performance as they beat Sunderland 4-1 on Saturday for their first win in three Premier League games, Sky Sports has reported.

The result came after a disappointing Champions League defeat at home to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, and with questions beginning to be asked about Arsenal’s capability of sustaining a title challenge.

The Gunners went ahead early on as Olivier Giroud - recalled to the starting line-up after a two game absence - finished off a neat passing move. The Frenchman then seized on Santiago Vergini’s poor back-pass to net the second before Tomas Rosicky lifted the ball over Vito Mannone to make it 3-0 after some fine interplay.

Laurent Koscielny’s header made four in the second half, and although Emanuele Giaccherini’s late half-volley took some gloss off the scoreline, Wenger was satisfied with the performance. He said: "It's the way we know we can play, it's the way we want to play. When it's successful, of course you are extremely happy, because it reinforces your belief in the way you want to play.

"It was an important game for us firstly. We had given a lot physically, against Liverpool (in the FA Cup last weekend), against Bayern, with 10 men. To win today was of course vital. We did the job in the first half very well and, after that, it was a convincing win."
