Newcastle vs Aston Villa - Premier League preview and team news

Sunday 23 February 2014

Newcastle United will be aiming to end their disappointing league run by taking all three points against an Aston Villa side for whom Premier League survival is the objective.

Manager Alan Pardew was forced to question his team’s desire as they collapsed to a 4-0 home defeat to Tottenham in their previous game, a result which made it three successive losses which have seen them concede 10 goals without reply. The St. James’ Park crowd is unlikely to tolerate many more poor performances, so they will arrive in an expectant mood on Sunday.

The visitors are in need of points, as a run of one point out of a possible nine has left them just four points clear of the drop zone. Paul Lambert will come into this game in a confident mood, however, as they will look to capitalise on the hosts’ bad form while enhancing their fine away record, despite that fact that Villa have only taken three points from their last seven visits to Tyneside.

Without a goal in four league games, Newcastle are boosted by the return of Loic Remy from suspension. Fabricio Coloccini and Cheick Tiote also return.

Aston Villa are without Jores Okore, but could give recalls to fit again duo Karim El Ahmadi and Andreas Weimann.
