Mignolet: Liverpool must improve defensively
Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has said that his side must improve in defence if they are to keep a firm grip on the final Champions League qualifying place, ESPN is reporting.
Four goals against Swansea City on Sunday saw Liverpool become the Premier League’s top scorers with 70 goals so far this season, but the Welsh club’s three strikes ensured that only Newcastle United have conceded more goals than the Reds out of all the sides in the top 10.
And while the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have been in prolific form this season, goalkeeper Mignolet knows that an improvement in defence is needed if Liverpool are to succeed this season. He said: "It wasn't easy, but we scored four goals and it was a very important win for us. The objective going into every game is to win and we did that.
"Obviously, it's easier to do that if you are not conceding goals and we know we need to be tighter and not concede so many. We are in a good position at the moment but with 11 games to go there are still a lot of things that can happen. We just need to try to get as much as we can out of all the games we have left. We need to stay calm and just focus on our next game at Southampton."
Many of Liverpool’s defensive options have suffered with injury this season, meaning that manager Brendan Rodgers has often been unable to field a settled back four. Daniel Agger’s future at the club is in doubt, while Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure have occasionally been at fault during this season.
