Injured Jagielka to miss England friendly
Thursday 27 February 2014
Everton defender Phil Jagielka will miss England’s upcoming friendly against Denmark at Wembley after picking up a hamstring injury, BBC Sport is reporting.
The 31-year-old was expected to be named in Roy Hodgson’s preliminary 30-man squad for the match, which is to be named later on Thursday, but news of his injury means that Hodgson cannot start the game with his preferred central defensive pairing of Jagielka alongside Chelsea’s Gary Cahill.
For Everton, who are already without several key players through injury, this represents yet another setback, although Jagielka is not expected to be out for long. Toffees boss Roberto Martinez said: "Phil felt his hamstring and will be missing at the weekend (against West Ham) and for England."
The Spaniard also suggested that midfielder Gareth Barry, who is spending the season at Goodison Park on loan from Manchester City, should be recalled to the England setup. He added: "I think Barry is ready to help England. The experience he brings is quite unique. It would be a great honour if he got a recall."
Barry has not been capped by England since May 2012 in Hodgson’s second game in charge, when he picked up an injury that ruled him out of that year’s European Championships.
