Southampton left-back Luke Shaw has been named in the senior England squad for the first time, ESPN has reported, as Roy Hodgson prepares for the national team’s final pre-World Cup friendly against Denmark.

England will play a number of warm-up games prior to travelling to Brazil but those fixtures will only be held once the provisional squad for the tournament has been named. That means the match against Denmark is the last opportunity to impress Hodgson at close quarters.

Shaw, 18, is included after catching Hodgson’s eye with his performances at club level. “Anyone who has watched him play would not deny he deserves a place,” Hodgson said. “I I think it was the right moment to invite him along with us. We are very well off in this potion but he wants to compete for a place on the plane to Brazil.”

Southampton are represented further by Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana, who were all included in previous squads.

Jermain Defoe is in the squad despite featuring rarely for Tottenham Hotspur and agreeing a move to MLS side Toronto. Ashley Cole is also involved despite losing his place at Chelsea to Cesar Azpilicueta.

Phil Jagielka’s injury has also given a place to Steven Caulker, the Cardiff City defender who was not in the original 30-man party.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Cardiff City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Toronto FC), Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Jay Rodriguez (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United)
