Southampton vs Liverpool - Premier League preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Friday 28 February 2014

Saturday’s late kick-off sees Liverpool visit Southampton, with Brendan Rodgers’ team looking to move above Manchester City into third place in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino has won both of his previous games against Liverpool as Saints boss, thanks largely to his pressing game. The Argentine comes into this latest encounter with his side in patchy form, although defeat at West Ham United last time out did end a run of seven points from nine in the league. Lying in ninth place, however, they can afford to rest fairly easily for the remainder of the campaign.

While Liverpool are very much in the hunt for the title this season, the 4-3 win over Swansea City did little to convince the doubters that they are solid enough defensively to emerge as the champions come May. However, they are almost impossible to contain when they go forward at present, with their four goals against the Swans making them the top scorers in the Premier League this season with 70.

Dejan Lovren could be fit enough to start for Southampton after he was an unused substitute at Upton Park, but fellow central defender Jos Hooiveld is likely to again miss out.

This game is likely to come too soon for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, who is nearing a return to fitness. Jose Enrique and Lucas Leiva remain on the sidelines.
