Reina has no Liverpool future, says Rodgers
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers doesn’t expect Pepe Reina to return to the club, ESPN has reported.
Rodgers took issue with a letter posted on Reina’s website in which the goalkeeper, who left to join Rafael Benitez’s Napoli on loan last summer, appeared to say goodbye to the Reds supporters. He also expressed his happiness at the chance to again play under Benitez.
“He's already written his letter, hasn't he? He wrote a goodbye letter, didn't he?” Rodgers said about Reina.
“I was surprised at the letter. When you are a loan player, I would expect that he should come back, but obviously Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli that he was looking to move.
“He penned a great big letter saying he was going to work with the best manager that he'd worked with and thanked him for his time for Liverpool. So, for me, it probably sounded like he'd made his decision there.”
Benitez was the manager who brought Reina to Anfield in 2005, signing the Barcelona academy graduate from Villarreal. Reina made almost 400 appearances for Liverpool before being replaced by Simon Mignolet.
