Johnson ready for 'massive' Capital One Cup win

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson is under no illusions as to the size of the achievement should the Black Cats beat Manchester City and win the Capital One Cup on Sunday, Sky Sports has reported.

Adam Johnson

City and Sunderland meet at Wembley with Johnson going up against his former side. The 26-year-old was part of the City team that won the Premier League title and FA Cup under Roberto Mancini but says success is different at the Etihad Stadium.

“When I was at City winning trophies and things, it was half-expected,” Johnson said. “But at Sunderland, no-one has even given us a chance of winning anything, so to bring that back would be massive.

“Especially the way the season has gone and playing City, it would probably be the highlight of my career, especially with Sunderland.”

Sunderland paid £10m to take Johnson from City and Gus Poyet has brought an upturn in form out of the former Middlesbrough wide man. It wasn’t enough to win an England recall for the squad to play Denmark last week and Johnson says that he doesn’t need any extra motivation playing against his former club.

“It's been a while now since I left,” Johnson pointed out. “But regardless of who you are playing for, as a player, you would always want to prove something in the final anyway whether you are the best player in the world or someone in his first final.

“You still want to be the best player on the pitch or the best player you can be, and I will be no different whether it's against City or anyone else.”
