Robin van Persie has said sorry to his Manchester United teammates for comments he made that appeared to criticise the way the team was playing, ESPN has reported.

Van Persie lamented that United players were getting in his way on the pitch and as a result, he wasn’t playing as well this season as he did last, his first at Old Trafford. The former Arsenal captain scored 30 goals in 48 games in all competitions, including 26 in 38 in the league, to deliver the Premier League title to United.

“Our players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in,” van Persie said after United lost 2-0 to Olympiakos in the Champions League on Tuesday. “And when I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well.

“That forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. Unfortunately, they're often playing in my zones. I think that's a shame.”

But according to reports, van Persie apologised to his United teammates for what he said and attempted to clarify his meaning, claiming he was being critical of his own game rather than theirs.

Van Persie spurned a chance to put United back in the tie late in the defeat in Athens, shooting over from inside the penalty area. The Netherlands international has though scored 14 goals in 20 games this season, including 11 in 15 in the league.
