Man City’s Nasri desperate for Wembley success

Manchester City attacking midfielder Samir Nasri is desperate to be on the winning side in Sunday’s Capital One Cup final, having suffered two previous Wembley disappointments, writes the Daily Express.

In both of the previous Wembley finals that Nasri has been involved in, his side have entered the game as heavy favourites, but have fallen to shock late defeats. The first of those came in the 2011 League Cup final when playing for Arsenal against Birmingham City, when a defensive mix-up saw the Gunners concede a stoppage time winner.


Then, in May, Nasri was part of the Man City side which was beaten in the FA Cup final by Wigan Athletic, so with the Citizens coming into Sunday’s encounter with Sunderland as clear favourites, the Frenchman is hoping to be third time lucky and avoid more disappointment at the national stadium.


He said: “At the moment Wembley has unhappy memories for me. After losing two finals there, it is time for to win one. They were similar games. The team that beat us went down. And I want to avoid the same thing happening again.


“We were heavy favourites to win both finals, just as we are this time. The memories still hurt. There was a good opportunity on both occasions to win a trophy and we didn’t do it.


‘And what made it worse is that at the end of the season the teams that beat us went down. You go back home after those games, play the game again in your head and it’s difficult to handle.”
