Sunderland manager Gus Poyet was left heartened by his team’s Capital One Cup final display and is hopeful it can be used as the backdrop for a successful relegation battle, BBC Sport has reported.

The Black Cats currently sit in 18th place of the Premier League but are just one point from safety, also boasting games in hand on the teams around them.

And the club surprised the majority at Wembley by taking the lead against favourites - title chasing Manchester City, although they went on the lose the game 3 - 1 thanks to stunning goals from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri, before Jesus Navas ensured victory in the 89th minute.

Reflecting on his sides performance Poyet said: “If we do this every week, I’m sure we will stay in the league.

“The Sunderland fans made me feel better because of the way they talked to us on the walk up at the end. It's a horrible walk to get the losers' medal, it's difficult to take. I'm sorry I wasn't the happiest when I was going up there.

"We need the fans now. I've said from day one, it was nearly an impossible job to stay in the Premier League. We were at the bottom, too far from the rest, but we have done some special things and I hope this gives us the experience to stay in the Premier League."

Sunderland have 12 games left to retain their Premier League status for another season and face some tough games against the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham, while also facing Hull in the quarter finals of the FA Cup.
