Barcelona to renew interest in Chelsea’s Luiz
Barcelona are to return to their pursuit of Chelsea defender David Luiz, after it was revealed that Carles Puyol will leave the Nou Camp at the end of the season, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Puyol, whose Barcelona career has lasted since 1999, confirmed his departure on Wednesday, ensuring that the Spanish giants will need to look for a new central defender this summer to play alongside Gerard Pique.
They are now expected to offer €30m for Luiz, who they have previously shown great interest in, having a bid rejected last summer. The Catalans are keen on completing any deal for the Brazilian before the start of this summer’s World Cup, with Luiz an important player for the host nation.
The 26-year-old has made 135 appearance for Chelsea in all competitions since joining in January 2011, but his opportunities have been slightly more limited this season.
John Terry and Gary Cahill are manager Jose Mourinho’s preferred centre-back pairing, while Nemanja Matic has recently filled the holding midfield role, meaning that the Blues could be more open to a sale should Barcelona make a new offer.
