Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey will sign a new contract with the Gunners, the Daily Mail has reported, with the Wales international also nearing full fitness and a return to action.

Ramsey has been absent since late December and is targeting the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on March 16 for his return. The 23-year-old has resumed light training but manager Arsene Wenger is reluctant to push Ramsey too hard after he suffered a set-back in late January when he first attempted to get back to full training.

Despite his injury, Ramsey has agreed a new contract worth £90,000 per week on terms until 2018, a pay rise from his current £60,000 wage. Ramsey is the third Arsenal player this week to put pen to paper, following on from Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky.

Ramsey hasn’t played since the 3-1 win over West Ham on Boxing Day but has 13 goals in 27 games from the first half of the season and is widely considered to be the London club’s form player between the start of the season and the turn of the year, according to the newspaper.

Formerly of Cardiff City, Ramsey has been at the Emirates Stadium since the summer of 2008, and had a loan spell back in the Welsh capital as well as a brief run with Nottingham Forest.
