Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted he does not engage in mind games, ESPN has reported.

Jose Mourinho

The Portuguese has given an interview to Esquire magazine in which he revealed his approach to the mental side of football.

He denied ever using what have been termed ‘mind games’ but did admit however that he uses the build-up to a fixture to try and influence members of the opposition, his players and supporters.

“It’s not mind games. I don’t try to do that,” Mourinho said.

“The period before the game can be important to influence opinions, characters, personalities, feelings and, of course, I use that to touch my players, to touch opponents, to touch supporters,” he continued. “But for me, the only game in football is the 90-minutes game.”

Mourinho first arrived at Chelsea in 2004 and immediately declared that he was a ‘special one’, then won two Premier League titles in as many years before leaving Stamford Bridge in 2007.

He resurfaced at Inter, winning the Serie A title and the Champions League, then pitched up at Real Madrid, delivering the Spanish league title to Santiago Bernabeu.

Mourinho returned to Chelsea this summer, replacing Rafael Benitez, and soon resumed hostilities with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, accusing the Gunners boss of being “a specialist in failure.”
