West Brom vs Man Utd - Premier League best and worst

Bookmark and Share

By Stephen Donovan

Friday 07 March 2014

West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United meet for the eighth time at the Hawthorns in the Premier League era on Saturday, with the most recent meetings providing the most entertainment:

Romelu Lukaku

Last Meeting

This game in May 2013 was Sir Alex Ferguson’s last game in charge of Man Utd, and it ended in a memorable 5-5 draw. The visitors found themselves three goals up on two occasions, but Romelu Lukaku’s wonderful second half hat-trick gave the Baggies a share of the spoils after the likes of Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez had threatened to dish out a final day hammering.

Most Emphatic Victory

West Brom were unable to prevent a hammering in February 2009 as the champions elect ran out 5-0 winners, with goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar breaking a Premier League clean sheet record in the process. Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring, before the hosts’ Paul Robinson was sent off. From then on, United romped to victory, with goals from Carlos Tevez and Nemanja Vidic, as well as two from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Head in hands moment

David De Gea made a somewhat shaky start to his Manchester United career, and provided more ammunition to his early doubters by allowing Shane Long’s weak shot to go right through him as West Brom cancelled out Wayne Rooney’s opener. Thankfully for the Spaniard, his side ground out a scarcely deserved victory thanks to an own goal from Steven Reid nine minutes from time.

Best Goal

James Morrison scored a superb volley from 25 yards to level a keenly contested encounter on New Year’s Day 2011, but it did not prove enough to beat the Red Devils. Peter Odemwingie’s penalty miss proved crucial as Man Utd went on to claim another victory on their march to the title. Morrison’s goal, however, was the standout moment on an unlucky day for Roberto Di Matteo’s team.
