Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has backed his full-back Luke Shaw to be included in Roy Hodgson’s 23-man World Cup squad, according to Sky Sports.

The 18-year-old earned his first England cap on Wednesday when he came on at half time in the 1-0 friendly victory over Denmark.

Despite the youngster having to compete with Chelsea veteran Ashley Cole and Everton’s Leighton Baines, Pochettino believes Shaw deserves a place in the squad heading for Brazil.

"I thought it was an amazing moment for him, for Southampton Football Club in general and also especially for all the managers he has had in the youth teams and academy,” said the Saints boss.

"To see a child from 10-years-old to actually making his international debut has to be a moment of great satisfaction and great pride.”

Shaw’s England debut makes him the youngest Southampton player to have earned a cap for the international side.

Now Shaw will wait to see if his performances this season have been enough to secure one of the two left-back spots available for this summer’s World Cup.

"I don't know what is going on through Roy's mind at the moment regarding Luke Shaw but, in light of the 45 minutes he played against Denmark, I think that he showed that he deserves to be in the team,” added Pochettino.

"He definitely showed that he has the quality to be in that team."
