Sheffield United vs Charlton - Match preview and team news

Sunday 09 March 2014

Sheffield United will be aiming to become the first third tier club since 2001 to reach the FA Cup semi-finals, when they take on Championship strugglers Charlton Athletic.

FA Cup

Nigel Clough will see this as the perfect opportunity for his side to reach the last four of the world’s oldest cup competition, and the Blades could not be in better form coming into it. Tuesday’s victory over Peterborough United was their eighth successive win in all competitions, a run which has changed them from relegation candidates to possible play-off outsiders.

The visitors’ only consistency this season has been in the FA Cup, denying Sheffield the possibility of a local derby by beating Wednesday in the previous round. After finishing ninth last season, 2013-14 has been a major disappointment, with the Addicks lying bottom of the Championship, albeit with games in hand. Scoring goals have been their biggest problem, as they have found the net just 24 times in their 30 league games.

Stephen McGinn is a doubt for Sheffield United, who are hopeful over the fitness of defenders John Brayford and Harry Maguire, as well as forward Jamie Murphy.

Charlton defenders Leon Cort and Chris Solly are both out with knee injuries, but Michael Morrison and Simon Church are in contention to start at Bramall Lane.
