Barkley and Shaw targeted by Manchester clubs

Manchester City have reportedly set aside up to £50m in transfer funds in order to bring in young British talent to the club, according to the Daily Star.

Luke Shaw

It is thought City will go head to head with their rivals in order to sign emerging British talent, and starlets such as Southampton’s Luke Shaw and Everton midfielder Ross Barkley are firmly on their radar.

There is a worry at the Etihad Stadium that there will be an insufficient number of home grown players in the squad for next season, with a minimum of eight required in the 25-man squad for the Premier League.

And it looks likely that City may even lose some of their current home-grown players - like defender Micah Richards, who failed to even make the bench for the Capital One Cup final.

Gareth Barry has already been loaned out to Everton this season and is unlikely to be at the club next term, while Joleon Lescott has already admitted he will not be at the club next season.

To emphasise, City’s Wembley starting line-up failed to include a single British player.

Playmaker Ross Barkley, 20, has been on their radar for some time, while full back Luke Shaw, 18, is one of the country’s most coveted players.

But the club will face stiff competition in the transfer market, especially from arch rivals Manchester United, as David Moyes looks to rebuild the Old Trafford side.
