Wenger praises Ozil after Arsenal FA Cup win
Arsene Wenger heaped praise on attacking midfielder Mezut Ozil for his ‘dirty work’, after he helped his side reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 2009, reports the Daily Mail.
The playmaker returned to the Arsenal side and helped boost the club’s chances of landing the trophy this season, having recently been left out of the team, and even booed off the pitch while playing for Germany midweek.
But the jaded star looked like he was finding some form again with a well-taken seventh minute finish against Everton during their 4 - 1 victory - his first goal since December, coming against the same club.
Wenger was quick to praise the player for his graft and determination throughout the match, especially after coming under fire in recent times.
Wenger said: “He said: ‘It was important for him to take his chance because sometimes he looks for the good pass instead. I hope that will encourage him.
“What I liked is that physically he looked regenerated, having more power in his runs. As well, what I liked was that he did a lot of what you would call “dirty work”. For a player like him, that means he tracked back in the first half, especially on the counter-attack, he came back with long runs and when he behaves like that, of course, you have a better chance to win.”
While the club have reached a Wembley semi-final without a fixture outside of London, the manager was quick to point out they had beaten tough opponents in Tottenham, Liverpool and now Everton, before playing down his side’s cup glory chances.
‘Let’s see who we have to play in the semi-final and do it again,” Wenger added.
