The Arena de Amazonia, the stadium that will host England’s opening World Cup game against Italy in the jungle city of Manaus, has been inaugurated by Brazilian officials, reports Sky Sports.

The stadium is the ninth to become available in Brazil ahead of football’s elite competition but three are yet to be finished, including the one in Sao Paolo where the opening game of the tournament is to be held approximately three months time.

While the Arena de Amazonia has not been fully completed on Sunday the venue played host to a regional championship match that nearly 20,000 attended, including workers who have been helping to complete the project.

The 44,000 capacity stadium is set to host four World Cup games in June, with the United States vs Portugal joining England’s opening match on the fixture list.

Manaus’ stadium was previously one of six stadia to not be completed by the end of 2013 as FIFA wished, and the inaugural event was even postponed from last month with too much work still to be done.

Sunday’s match between Nacional and Remo was organised to simulate a World Cup event, and only fans with tickets were allowed inside a 1-kilometre (0.6-mile) perimeter near the stadium.

13,000 tickets were sold to the general public while 7,000 were given to stadium workers and their relatives.

Over 2,500 police were attended the match, including 200 in charge of monitoring ticket scalpers outside the stadium and some 70 officers inside the venue working on the pitch and the stands.
