Vertonghen still optimistic over Champions League spot

Jan Vertonghen has spoken of his hopes Tottenham can still claw their way into the Champions League positions despite his personal nightmare at Stamford Bridge, the Daily Mail has reported.

The Belgian was at fault for Chelsea’s first goal in their 4 - 0 drubbing of Spurs, slipping whilst on the ball before playing the ball straight to Samuel Eto’o in an attempt to recover, with the striker putting the home side a goal in front.

Vertonghen has recently stayed silent on his Tottenham future if the club fail to qualify for Champions League football but has refused to give up on their fourth place bid this season.

“Is it over and out for the Champions League now? I’ll never say that, but it’s gone be hard,” Vertonghen said.

“I slipped away and thought Schurrle could take the ball. That’s why I tried to slide the ball to the goalkeeper. But accidentally, it seemed to be the perfect assist for Eto’o. It was the beginning of a hard night.”

To make matters worse, centre back Younes Kaboul was sent off moments later for bringing down Eto’o in the penalty area for what appeared to be a soft penalty, with the spot kick converted by Vertonghen’s international team mate Eden Hazard.

Two more defensive howlers late on led to two more goals and heaped more misery on the North London club, who are now four points adrift of fourth placed Manchester City, having played three games more.
