Defoe eyes England World Cup spot

Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe remains hopeful of securing a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad after moving to MLS side Toronto FC, Sky Sports has reported.

Defoe left for America at the end of last month having completed his move to the MLS and concerns were raised that the striker may well be overlooked by the England boss for after leaving England with just a few months before football’s elite competition.

However David Beckham proved that a player can remain in England contention while playing across the Atlantic, and Defoe is hoping that regular goals will keep him firmly in Hodgson’s plans for the summer.

"Obviously it's at the back of my mind, but first and foremost it's important to concentrate on your club and make sure your form is good," said the 31-year-old.

"As a forward you get judged on scoring goals. I think that's on my mind first and foremost, and then see what happens with the World Cup."

Defoe is expected to make his Toronto bow this weekend against the Seattle Sounders after manager and former Tottenham team mate Ryan Nelson worked hard to secure the transfer.

And Nelson dismissed suggestions that the hit man will find it difficult to impress the national team boss in America, stating that his finishing was well known to Hodgson.

Asked if Defoe could be forgotten, Nelsen said: "No, not at all. You know a lot of conversations have been had behind the scenes with certain people.

"When you are a player like Jermain, the manager knows Jermain inside and out, everybody does, they know what he's going to give them. As long as he's fit and playing well, he'll be up for selection."
