Bayern Munich vs Arsenal - Match preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Tuesday 11 March 2014

Arsenal face an uphill task on Tuesday night as they look to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit against the European champions at the Allianz Arena.

The Gunners will come into this game with belief that they can pull off a shock result and make the quarter-finals, after winning away to Bayern Munich last season, albeit that result was not enough to turn the tie around. They played well in the first leg in North London, but their purposeful start was halted by Mesut Ozil’s crucial penalty miss.

Goals from Toni Kroos and Tomas Muller saw Bayern capitalise on the sending off of Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, and since that disappointing night for the Emirates Stadium club, they have had missed fortunes, reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but losing ground in the Premier League due to a defeat at Stoke City.

Bayern, heavy favourites to reach the last eight, are showing no signs of relenting in what has been a dominant campaign. They are currently 20 points ahead of nearest rivals Borussia Dortmund at the top of the German Bundesliga, and won 6-1 away to Wolfsburg at the weekend.

Lukasz Fabianski will be in goal for Arsenal with Szczesny suspended, while manager Arsene Wenger is also without Abou Diaby, Kieran Gibbs, Nacho Monreal, Aaron Ramsey, Yaya Sanogo, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere, who are all injured.

Wenger’s opposite number, Josep Guardiola, has the luxury of a fully-fit squad available, including Franck Ribery, who was absent for the first leg.
