Barcelona vs Man City - Match preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Wednesday 12 March 2014

On Wednesday, Manchester City will be looking to succeed where Arsenal failed in the last 16 of the Champions League, and overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini took a slightly more methodical approach to the first leg, and it did not quite pay off, as Man City struggled to create chances throughout a game which changed completely with the sending off of Martin Demichelis for bringing down Lionel Messi, who stepped up to score the resulting penalty.

Daniel Alves’ late second ensured that this looks set to be an uphill task, and City hardly made the ideal preparations for this trip, producing a lacklustre performance against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup, and ending up on the wrong end of a major shock.

However, Barcelona also lost completely against the odds at the weekend, slipping to a 1-0 reverse away to La Liga strugglers Real Valladolid, who capitalised on their opponents’ lack of fluency. In fact, the Catalans have stuttered in the league in recent weeks, and have slipped to third, four points behind leaders Real Madrid.

For a Man City side hoping to keep their European hopes alive, Demichelis is suspended and Matija Nastasic injured, so Joleon Lescott or Javi Garcia will play alongside Vincent Kompany in central defence. Stevan Jovetic is also ruled out.

Barcelona will be without Jonathan Dos Santos and Isaac Cuenca, but otherwise have a fully fit squad as they look to make the quarter-finals for the seventh successive season.
