Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said the competition for places at the club is such that the players are fighting for their futures, Sky Sports has reported.

The Toffees are currently seventh in the Premier League table, level on points with Manchester United, but have played a game fewer than the defending champions. Martinez added that the squad have been informed what is expected of them for the final 11 games of the season after Everton were knocked out of the FA Cup at the weekend.

“The players are well aware,” Martinez told the Everton website. “There's massive competition for places in the dressing room and we all know we've got six demanding games at Goodison Park.

“That's something we really enjoy, playing in front of our fans and making sure everyone is proud of what we do at Everton. We've got 33 points to fight for and it's an essential moment of the season.”

Martinez replaced David Moyes at Goodison after Moyes left to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at United. Everton beat United at Old Trafford in December and Moyes will return to Goodison with his new club on April 20.
