Wenger to blame for Ozil form, says Neville

Gary Neville has said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is to blame for the poor form of Mesut Ozil, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Mesut Ozil

Neville believes Wenger should have allowed Ozil a break over the winter as the Germany international hasn’t adapted to English football following his August transfer from Real Madrid. The Gunners paid a club record £42.5m for the midfielder.

Ozil was injured during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich on Tuesday and had to be substituted at half-time. It has since been confirmed Ozil has injured his hamstring.

“[Ozil has] obviously dipped this last couple of months and first season in a new league can take some getting used to, even with the price tag,” Neville said.

“Some players can carry lack of form better than others. His body language suggests he struggles and at the moment looks like he's finding it difficult mentally.

“On a Christmas break, there is no excuse really for an experienced manager. He could have given him one in the first two weeks in January. [Cristiano] Ronaldo used to get one.”

Neville played with Ronaldo at Manchester United and since retiring has worked as a television pundit and a coach with England under manager Roy Hodgson.
