Rodgers deserves new contract, says Liverpool captain Gerrard

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said that the club’s owners should award manager Brendan Rodgers an extension to his current contract, the Guardian has reported.

Brendan Rodgers

After the club finished seventh in his first season in charge, Rodgers has turned the Reds into Premier League title contenders, with five wins in the last six league games leaving them second in the Premier League table, four points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand.

The former Swansea City boss has achieved this against the odds, with the objective prior to the beginning of the season being to merely finish in the top four and thus qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009, but Sunday’s 3-0 win away to Manchester United has led to belief that they could win the title.

And Gerrard believes that Rodgers has done enough to earn an extension to his contract, which runs out at the end of next season, and has called on the Fenway Sports Group to offer the Northern Irishman a new deal. He said: "When you become an older player you look to see how the manager does certain things and he has been fantastic for myself personally.

‘I am sure the rest of the players would echo what I am saying. I am absolutely delighted he is here and I just hope that there is a lot of movement now in Boston [home to FSG] because they have got to get him signed up as soon as possible."

"When players are in this situation with a year to go and you want to keep hold of them so desperately, then the club reacts really quickly and gets it sorted. For me, I think he deserves a very long contract here and he is perfect for this club."
